I am beyond honored and happy to share my wraparound cover illustration (and interior feature article) for this quarter’s issue of The Modern Green Book publication! This issue, entitled “Beans, Greens, Potatoes”, was all about celebrating FOOD - and the wonderful ways in which it connects us and inspires us! Indeed a favorite subject of mine!
I have titled this piece “Soul Food” to not only link with the content of the MGB itself, but to also further highlight the idea that food connects us — the sights and smells of it bring to mind memories of shared times, happy moments, or funny things! I wanted to depict the fun and messy nature of food and cooking and its analogous correlation to the fun and messy nature of our lives! Oh, how much joy it can bring to make food together and for others!
A huge thank you and shoutout to the wonderful Founder and CEO, Theo Edwards-Butler, for providing me with this fantastic opportunity!! The figure on the front cover is modeled after her likeness as an added appreciation of all the incredible work she is doing!!

The theme for this issue was “Let Them Lead” - with the publication focusing on young entrepreneurs, youth, and the people who are “pouring into the next generation”!
When I read the prompt for this issue, I was immediately drawn to the particular phrasing “pouring into the next generation” - from there I imagined a giant lightbulb (representing intelligence, leadership, and success) pouring creativity, love, and joy into a future generation, nourishing them with the waters of imagination, kindness, and wisdom – encouraging them to grow into generous and inspiring people - including and supporting one another as we should be.
The decision to have them all growing out of the same pot is meant to represent the idea that although we are all unique, we should celebrate together in harmony – unifying our lives instead of separating them. That although we branch off into our own unique paths, we can still be unified through the soil we grew from – that the roots of our existence should not be forgotten.

This illustration was created for the second issue of The Modern Green Book, a non-profit organization.
The theme for this issue was “Waves”: focusing on summertime vibes and highlighting businesses that help you have fun, look good, and feel good – as well as people who are making positive waves in their community. I was one of five artists chosen for a full-page feature to communicate this theme!

This illustration was created for the first issue of a non-profit organization called The Modern Green Book.
The theme for this issue was “Breaking Ground”; physically and metaphorically. This publication is a collection of stories and discussions about growth, renewal, starting up, and new opportunities.
The wonderful team behind the publication wanted to bring in artists to transform this idea into visual imagery that represents what this message means and inspire readers to think about their own stories of success throughout the tough year of 2020.
I was one of eight artists chosen to bring this theme to life!
